The scenario covers a c1755 frontier settlement attacked by raiding Indian tribes. This scenario was a playtest of the Face of Battle: French and Indian War rules for skirmish gaming from 1700 to 1820. These rules are expected to be released in 2006.

The Barn Under Attack

The barn settlement is surrounded. War Band #1 and the Coureur des Bois have killed or wounded the Militia on the west side. Matters could have been worse for the British except the Coureur des Bois had a lot of musket mishaps (jams, reloads and malfunctions). The Indians have started to scalp the Miltia!

The bottom is War Bands #2, #3 and #4. The Settlers are fleeing to the right (south).

Help Arrives

British Regulars #1 have crossed the river and forced march to take up position on the west side of the field. They encounter the Coureur des Bois and the Indian War Band #1. The #2 British Regulars have now crossed the bridge and have taken up position on the field to the east. The British rangers are crossing the river and heading into the forest.

The Counter Attack

The British forces fire on the Indians moving into the barn. The Indians are protecting their attack while they pillage the barn for goods and items of value. A good battle between the British Force #2 and the War Bands #2 and #4 at close range. The Indians being to suffer their first casualties. War Band #3 is in the barn.

The Battle With The French

British Force #1 moves along side the fence and exchanges musket fire with the Coureur des Bois. The British lose a few men under the light cover of the fence and the open ground of the field. The Coureur des Bois stay in the protection of the tree line.

Raiding The Barn

With one force of British pinned down in the fields, and one force of British engaging the Indians at the tree line, and the last of the Militia engaged in hand-to-hand combat, the Indians were free to raid the barn. The Indians are after scalps, whiskey, blankets and gunpowder (their glory die roll). The next turn saw the British Force #2 move up on the barn by shooting some covering Indians in the forest. In another twist, the local Militia managed to capture an Indian and kill another in hand-to-hand combat. This allowed the British the freedom to move on the Barn. Trapped inside, the Indians escaped through the open window, down a side roof and started to flee towards the forest. The British Rangers chased away any remaining Indians that were in the forest.

The Escape

The settlers managed to escape across the field, over the bridge and to safety!

Aftermath

Only 5 Indians achieved their Glory and escaped into the forest. The Indians suffered another 6-7 KIA or captured. The remaining 10-12 Indians fled into the forest empty handed. Three settlers and the majority of Militia were killed. British Force #1 suffered 3 or 4 KIA's against the Coureur des Bois. No Coureur des Bois were injured. British Force #2 suffered a few minor casualties. The British Rangers were not touched.

Based on the fact that more settlers were saved (7) versus Indians with Glory (5), I gave a marginal win to the British/Militia/Settlers. I did not give the British players a decisive win since many Miltita were killed and British Forces failed to kill or capture a significant number of Courer des Bois and Indians.

All players really enjoyed the game. The players felt converting The Face of Battle to French and Indian Wars should not be a problem. The game played fast and captured the flavour of the period.

Some comments on the tactics and strategy used:
  • the British Force #1 did suffer high KIA's (in the field), it was agreed that their brave action held the flank and prevent CDB's and Indians from circling around
  • although the Militia suffered 80% casualties, they did their job by alerting the British and holding the settlement until help arrived
  • the Militia also prevented many Settler deaths or capture
  • the British Ranger force could have started closer to the river
  • everyone enjoyed the Indian Glory and Omen rules, it added nice flavour to the game
  • the rules for volley fire and 'group' move for th British forces added good period flavour
